Scenario Details

  • Donna is a 22-year-old college student who had gotten increasingly withdrawn, isolating herself from peers, eating alone, and being increasingly concerned that radio waves would interfere with her brain waves, causing her to feel muddled and “empty” in her head. She further had developed the delusion that her thoughts would be audible to others via their headphones and had heard a voice warning her of these developments
  • She was admitted after her parents drove to the college town being alarmed by her disorganized and panicky messages and finding her disheveled in her apartment
  • She was treated successfully with a second-generation oral antipsychotic, with a marked reduction in frequency and intensity of the positive symptoms and no relevant negative symptoms, tolerating the oral antipsychotic well except for mild hypersomnia that does not bother her
  • She is taking the medication and does “absolutely” not want to ever get sick again and be in need of psychiatric hospitalization
