LAI Considerations

  • Discuss LAI of the oral antipsychotic whose tolerability/exposure has been established to:
    • Help ensure continuity of foundational medication treatment

    • Mitigate psychotogenic effects of substances of abuse

  • Substance use and substance use disorder are common in people with schizophrenia and have been associated with an increased risk of relapse and nonadherence with antipsychotic medication

  • In patients with substance use disorder and a history of recent incarceration, treatment with an LAI was more effective than oral antipsychotics in delaying time to hospitalization or arrest/incarceration
