LAI Considerations

• Discuss LAI of the oral antipsychotic whose tolerability/exposure has been established to ease pill burden
• A shared decision-making approach between the healthcare provider, patient, and family/caregiver allows for an open discussion about the advantages and disadvantages of each treatment option, and could help increase patient knowledge and acceptance of LAIs

• Guidelines suggest the use of LAIs beyond nonadherence. The American Psychiatric Association Practice Guidelines suggest that patients receive treatment with an LAI if they prefer such treatment and the Florida Best Practice Psychotherapeutic Medication Guidelines suggest initial treatment can include an oral antipsychotic followed by the same LAI formulation
